The Blindness of Self-Will and the Counterfeit Harvest

There is a profound tension between self-preservation and surrender. For many who have navigated a world that felt predatory, the “will” becomes a defensive shield. But when we refuse to let anything take precedence over our own desires, we inadvertently develop a spiritual and emotional blindness.

The Survival Trap

When someone has experienced being a victim, their self-will often becomes their only perceived source of safety. Even when they claim to “surrender,” they may struggle to let a higher purpose take place ahead of their own immediate needs. This creates a state of hyper-independence where environments and people are manipulated to ensure the individual never feels vulnerable again.

However, appearing to have life while offering no real substance is the natural result of a life lived strictly for the self. By focusing entirely on controlling surroundings to fulfill personal wants, we lose the ability to see the “weightier matters”—justice, mercy, and genuine connection.

Moral Camouflage: The “Optics” of the False Harvest

The danger of this path is that these individuals don’t just lack fruit; they bear fruit from an “other tree” as a way to stay hidden. This is moral camouflage. They perform acts of service and “do good” with such precision that it becomes a tactical cover.

For the master manipulator, these deeds are a cloaking device. By surrounding themselves with the optics of goodness, they create a shield that makes them appear beyond reproach. If you do enough “good,” it becomes harder for others to question your underlying motives.

The Danger of Self-Confusion

The most tragic part of this dynamic is that these individuals eventually confuse themselves:

  • Performance vs. Identity: They mistake their public performance for their true identity.
  • Moral Bargaining: They use “good works” to bargain with the truth, telling themselves they cannot be manipulative because of the help they provide.
  • The Fear of Truth: They stay blind because seeing the truth would require losing the control they have fought so hard to maintain.

This is a level of blindness that goes beyond being lost; it is being lost while holding a map you drew yourself.

Breaking the Mirror

True fruitfulness doesn’t mind being overlooked, but for the manipulator, being seen is the whole point. They need an audience to validate the mask. When “goodness” is used to prevent vulnerability, it isn’t fruit—it’s bait.

To move toward a genuine life, one must stop using good deeds as a weapon of control. Until the self-will is no longer the primary driver, we remain trapped in a cycle of planting an artificial garden and wondering why our souls are still hungry.

Reflection: If no one ever saw your good works, would you still do them? Is your “fruit” a byproduct of a healthy soul, or a billboard for a guarded ego?
